Mint Marks on U.S. Coins

The United States Mint currently has four mints in operation. The San Francisco Mint in California, All Proof sets from 1968 to date display the (S) Mint mark on the obverse side of the coins. The West Point Mint in New York produces mostly Proof commemorative and bullion coins. The (W) mint mark is found on the obverse of most modern commemorative's.

The other two more familiar mints, Denver Colorado signified by the (D) and the first mint in operation the Philadelphia Mint that had no need for mint marks at the time didn't put the (P) mint mark except for on the Jefferson Silver Wartime Nickels, of 1942 to 1945 then not until 1979, on the SBA Dollar and then to follow in 1980 to date on the Nickel, Dime, Quarter and Half Dollar.

For some reason the Cent from Philadelphia is the only United States coin that still has no mint mark.

The Philadelphia and Denver mints may make some commemorative coins but for the most part these two mints produce all the coins for use in daily commerce and of course your Mint sets.

There have been eight different Mint marks used since the United States began striking coins for circulation in 1793, see chart below.

D Dahlonega, Georgia

O New Orleans, Louisiana 1838-1909
S San Francisco, California 1854-Present
CC Carson City, Nevada 1870-1893
D Denver, Colorado 1906-Present
