Certified Coins

Certified Coins, are coins that have been graded by a third party grading service. The three most popular are ANACS, NGC and PCGS.

Coins are sent by clients and members of the public to local dealers, known as submission centers. These dealers prepare the paperwork and for a fee charged to the client, submit the coins to be certified.

Upon receipt the service opens the package, register's the contents and assigns an identification number for each coin, from this point on the coin is only known by the identification number.

The coin is submitted to a panel of independent graders, who without knowledge of the coin's owner, come up with an unbiased consensus grading opinion.

Then one more grader, known as a Finalizer, reviews the opinion. If the grade is not agreed, it is sent back through for regrading. If approved the numerical designation is printed on a ticket which is encapsulated with the coin in a rectangular tamper proof, hard plastic holder, popularly known as a "slab".  Sonically sealed, the slab protects the coin from further handling and oxidation known as "toning", thus ensuring that it will remain in the grade and color stated.

The advent of unbiased third-party grading has been welcomed by many, particularly investors who on their own are not familiar with grading practices. In as much as the opinions are unbiased, such certified coins are very popular. However, it has been shown that the same coin, if submitted to another grading service, or if resubmitted to the same grading service, can be graded differently. Although, by and large, the grading services are quite consistent with the majority of items examined.

The typical grading service fee is apt to be $20 or more, the services have been utilized primarily for coins of higher values, especially those in Mint State and Proof categories.

Coins which have been altered, cleaned, artificially toned, or show damage other then normal wear, such as if someone carved their initials on it .. are not certified.
