Proof Coins

The Philadelphia Mint issued the first Proof set for sale to the public in 1936 and ended in 1964. Proof sets are produced similar to the Mint set except for a few extra steps, the planchets are polished and struck on specially polished dies under higher pressure allowing every detail to show, giving the coin a brilliant mirror finish, sometimes with frosted highlights.

Instead of dumping the coin into bags, these prized coins are placed in protective packaging.

Made only for collectors, Proof coins are not intended for circulation.

No Proof sets were produced for the years 1965, 1966 or 1967 instead the U.S. Mint issued Special Mint Sets. These SMS are an in between better then a Mint set but not as good as a Proof set.

The San Francisco Mint started issuing Proof sets for sale to the public in 1968 and is currently the only mint producing Proof sets. You can purchase these pristine coins, Current year only, in different ways direct form the U.S. Mint.

For this years Proof coins, the best place / price would be from the U.S. Mint.

If supplies ran out or you need a previous year see my Price List below.
