How to tell if your coin is silver

All United States Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollars dated 1837 to 1964 is made of .900 fine silver, also called ninety percent silver, which means 90% of the coins total volume is composed of silver.

Kennedy Halves dated 1965 through 1970 contain 40% silver.

A quick way to check if your coin is silver is to turn it on its side, if you can see copper in the edge of the coin, it's not silver.

This only works with a dime or higher, a nickel may have a silver color but it's made out of nickel not silver, except for the war nickels of 1942 - 1945 in which the mints substituted silver for nickel.

Most commemorative coins are 90% silver and in 1992 the U.S. Mint started making Silver Proof Sets, along with the regular Proof Sets.

As you may know the regular Proof Sets 1971 to date contain NO silver coins at all. If your 1992 or later Proof set doesn't say it's a Silver Proof Set it's not one.

The dual-dated 1776.1976 Bicentennial Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollars that were sold by the Mint in special three piece Mint and Proof Sets contain 40% silver.

These SPECIAL sets have an "S" mint mark. They are different from the Bicentennial coins you can find in circulation or in regular Mint and Proof Sets and were sold by the Mint at a premium to collectors.

The Silver American Eagle
