The United States has made ten cent pieces since 1796, with six major
design changes, Draped Bust, Capped Bust, Seated, Barber, Mercury and
Roosevelt dimes.
Most of the dimes you will come across in old dressers drawers, trunks
or bullion bags of silver dimes would be of the last three types.
The Barber dime called after the designer Charles E. Barber, with his
initial B. at the truncation of the neck. Is also called the
Liberty Head, it features a head of Liberty facing right.
The Mercury dime as it is commonly called because it resembles the mythical
figure Mercury. Is also known as Winged Liberty for its representation of
Liberty facing left wearing a winged cap. The wings crowning her cap was
intended to symbolize liberty of thought.
