There have been eight major design types of half dollars minted in the
United States since 1794. They are Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust,
Liberty Seated, Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin and Kennedy Half dollars.
With each having at least one different variety.
The Barber Half, like the dime and quarter is called after the designer
Charles E. Barber, his initial B. is at the truncation of the neck. Its
also called the Liberty Head, it features a head of Liberty facing right.
The Walking Liberty design features a full figure of Miss Liberty facing
left. The reverse displays a perched eagle.
The Franklin Half, the first regular-issue U.S. coin to picture a
non-President, Benjamin Franklin, a statesman, philosopher, scientist and
an inventor. Maybe most known for his discovery of electricity.

Fascinated by sound, heat, sight and other forms of energy, Benjamin Franklin
also found time to invent the Franklin Stove, a harmonica, lightning rods and
bifocals.
The obverse features the profile of Benjamin Franklin facing right while the main element of the reverse design is the famous Liberty Bell. The Kennedy Half, An immediate tribute to former President John F. Kennedy following his assassination. His profile facing left is on the obverse and the presidential coat of arms on the reverse. The obverse of the Bicentennial Kennedy Half minted in 1975 and 1976 remained the same except for the dual dating 1776-1976, the reverse design depicts Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
